Andrew,

Thanks for reiterating the reality of GPS. That appears to be the chosen solution but hopefully people can understand your math and put it to rest. I’m not completely sure of how Seeker is working; off of the Carrier networks or supplemental network info. Previous work of mine included having a handset app that did recognize it’s indoor/outdoor location; let me know if you want to discuss further. It’s a very interesting space.

Great post! With regards to CELL-ID triangulation methods – are they open to developers OR must a developer get permission from an Operator to use the CELL-ID information?

I know in the U.S. our Wireless Carriers are very protective of location information and I would be curious to know if they would allow just any developer to create applications that leverage this location method?

Good points, Martin. Connect the dots and there is also a huge opportunity for advertisers/brands/content companies to location-enable their pitches without having to involve (or pay!) mobile operators. On paper, the analytics are the operator’s crown jewels; in practice, we could see other companies stake their claim. Andrew will explore this in his next column – and I hope you will check back…

Very interesting post. Shows the way for mobile operators to become advertising partners. Just imagine they would set up a Web based interface for their customers where potential advertisers can define a location in which their advertisement is delivered to the people in the zone or entering the zone. Combine that with revenue sharing with the user for their willingness to receive ad’s via SMS, automate the whole thing including reports to advertisers how many ads have been sent and you have a nice system in place. And as a mobile operator you don’t even have to give the location information out to third parties. The customers willing to have ads would gain, the network operator would gain and advertisers would have a powerful location based tool in their hands.
